How to Extract Filenames from URL in Excel

There are numerous occasions when we want to extract file name from given URL’S in excel. In my case this situation arises when we are migrating data and we have to prepare reports for the same. There might be various ways to extract files names from URL’s in excel but I use simple find and replace functionality to accomplish this task.

Below are the steps to extract filenames from given URL in Excel:

  1. Open the excel with all URL’S from where we have to extract file name.
  2. Create a separate column with “File Name”.
  3. Select the column with the file name URL’s.
  4. Copy the values from the “URL’s” Column and paste them on newly created “File Name” column.
  5. Now Select the column “File Name” and hit “Ctrl + F” to get “Find and Replace” dialogue box.
  6. Navigate to Replace Tab.
  7. In “Find What” type – “*/” without quotes (“”).
  8. Leave the “Replace With” field blank.url-file-name-1
  9. Click on “Replace All” button.
  10. A confirmation box will popup with information on how many records have been replaced.
  11. Close the “Find and Replace Dialogue” box.get-filename-from-url-2
  12. You are done.

This is the easiest way I have used to extract file name from URL or file path. Share with us if you are using other easiest way to do the same. 🙂
